As we age, we all begin to notice certain issues with our physical and mental health. From not being able to get around as easily as we once did to being more forgetful, the vast majority of seniors will experience some concerns. These can impact the way we live, preventing us from being as independent as we once were and requiring support to complete day-to-day tasks. However, what are the most common senior health problems? We have taken a closer look at seven of the most frequent.

1) Arthritis

One of the most common medical conditions for seniors is arthritis. This is the condition that sees inflammation within the joints, which can cause significant pain and reduced movement. For many seniors, it can be a discomfort that barely impacts their day-to-day life; however, for many, it can be far more impactful, significantly increasing the likelihood of a fall.

In these instances, ensuring there is 24/7 support on call, either from home help or an assisted living facility, will ensure that they can immediately receive support when they need it.

2) Heart Disease

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death across the globe and is caused by fatty substances slowly building up in the arteries of our heart, blocking the supply of blood. This can happen to anyone, but it is particularly common in those who smoke, have high cholesterol or blood pressure, are obese, or are diabetic.

Quick action is essential to stopping coronary heart disease from being fatal, so those at high risk should ensure they have carers capable of reaching them whenever needed.

3) Alzheimer’s

Memory issues can impact anyone, and Alzheimer’s affects nearly six million Americans currently, with that expected to rise to 13 million by 2050. Typically, this condition will start slowly, with seniors forgetting names or becoming muddled, but as it worsens, it will result in them requiring full around-the-clock support.

Due to the cognitive impairment it causes, it can have a serious impact on the individual’s safety, leaving them unable to care for themselves and requiring specialist nursing care.

4) Osteoporosis

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, there are an estimated 54 million American’s over the age of 50 living with the condition, making it one of the most common senior health problems. The condition sees the bone mass deteriorate, significantly increasing the risk of fractures following a fall and even leading to disability as the vertebral bodies collapse.

Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help to keep the bones and joints healthier. However, as the condition deteriorates, then more specialist care will be required to help them with things such as getting out of bed, getting dressed, and toileting.

5) Diabetes

When it comes to common senior health problems, diabetes is one of the most frequent, with it causing over 50,000 deaths a year. Type 2 diabetes is the most common, and it can be identified quickly with a blood test. The sooner someone is diagnosed, the quicker the condition can start to be controlled.

For those seniors with cognitive issues, remembering to control the disease can be more challenging, and they will need the support from an assisted living facility or in-home helper.

6) Depression

A major health problem impacting seniors is depression. While many would like to age at home, this can result in vast amounts of time on their own, leading to feelings of loneliness. Senior living facilities can help to combat these issues by providing regular social activities that allow them to meet new friends and engage in fun events. For those seniors not looking to leave their home, then home health care support can give them the help they need.

7) Sensory Impairment

Sensory impairment is very common in seniors. As we age, our hearing and vision often decrease, and while these can be treated with hearing aids and glasses, if the impairments get too much, then it can be challenging for your loved ones to get around. In this instance, they would require specialist care from skilled professionals to help them with their day-to-day activities such as cooking, cleaning themselves, toileting, and getting around.
